During a recent discussion with select members of Creative Assembly, we asked whether the strategy specialists would be willing to develop a sequel based on the Roman Empire once again and the answer was music to our battle-loving ears.
"I think it’s an obvious choice for a sequel and I would be surprised if we didn’t do that at some point. The thing is it would be quite a big project though," explained Shogun 2′s lead artist Kevin McDowell.
"The main thing about doing a game like Rome is that it covers so much time and geography that we couldn’t get into the same sort of depths that we’re getting into with Shogun 2 without troubling the budget."
Rome: Total War is still considered by many to be the most enjoyable in the decade-old strategy series and a direct sequel/remake would be welcomed by many fans.
On the other hand, Total War: Shogun 2 includes a level of depth and historical detail which puts previous games in the series to shame and seeing as Rome: Total War covered multiple centuries worth of history and the entire continent of Europe, offering a remake of that depth and range would prove a considerable challenge.
Jamie Ferguson, lead designer for Total War: Shogun 2, also threw in his two cents regarding the future of the series:
"During a project and towards the end we have constant discussions about what we are doing next and how that links in with what we are doing now. It does sound corny, but being Creative Assembly isn’t just a name.
"We do allow everyone to have their input and as a result there are lots of different parties and ideas. Some people want to go further into the future, some want to go further into the past, some want to do China, some want to do World War II, others want to do Modern Warfare.
"There’s lots of different gameplay in there."
So it seems the Sussex based developer is considering a wide of possibilities regarding where the Total War series will go next, but at the very least fans can look forward to Rome being covered again at some point in the future.
Creative Assembly are currently hard at work on Total War: Shogun 2 which incidentally is looking like the best this series has offered for some time.
We’ll have a lengthy preview of the strategy sequel and further insights from Kevin and Jamie next week.
