Ubisoft has announced that the next game in the strategy series Anno will be set in 2070 and it is currently being developed by Related Designs in collaboration with Blue Byte.
Anno 2070 follows on from previous games which jumped 300 years each time, with the first entry set in 1404 and the second in 1701.
Obviously this jump from European colonialism to a future transformed by the effects of climate change and a wide array of new technologies may alienate some fans, but Ubisoft want to assure fans that the core of the franchise will still be the same.
"Anno 2070 is a very ambitious game that will feel both familiar and fresh to fans of the series," explained Caroline Stevens, brand director at Ubisoft.
"Due to the game’s futuristic setting, the development team wasn’t restricted by historical boundaries and was able to dream bigger than ever before. It’s a new take on a great franchise that both newcomers and longtime fans will love."
