Notch and co. are considerably richer than you!
A Financial Times report has revealed that Minecraft has accumulated over 540 million Swedish krona in revenue since launch.
That translates to $80.8 million; a considerable achievement, especially considering makers Mojang only consists of twenty-five developers.
Mojang was co-founded by Markus “Notch” Persson who’s the studio’s largest stakeholder, but according to the FT report, he decided to share his $3.7m dividend amongst the rest of the company.
What a lovely fella!
Minecraft has over 25 million registered users and judging from the official website its growth isn’t slowing with 8,321 buying full access to the indie hit over the past twenty four hours.
Thanks to the ubiquitous nature of the internet, it’s now possible for ‘indie’ developers to have the kind of success which would make the world’s biggest publishers turn green with envy; all you need is an idea and the expertise to pull it off.
Congratulations Mojang, you certainly deserve it.
