The house that controllers built developing new online experience built on Flight Simulator X.
The name Mad Catz conjures up somewhat mixed impressions. For every fantastic flight stick they’ve produced over the years, there’s always been the odd gamepad, steering wheel or peripheral oddity which has left a sour taste in gaming mouths.
Today all that changes though as Mad Catz move into the potentially lucrative area of making games, with their internal studio ThunderHawk working on Combat Pilot, a new online-only flight sim experience which seeks to recreate what it’s like to be a modern military pilot for a host of different real life air forces.
“We believe that Combat Pilot will prove to be an important destination for the flight simulation community to gather, interact, and share experiences,” stated Mad Catz president and CEO Darren Richardson. “Combat Pilot will allow the flight simulation community to come together and interact as never before.”
The only kicker is that this service will be cost $49.99 initially, along with a monthly fee to stay subscribed to online servers, and that wannabe players will need to own a copy of Flight Simulator X in order to begin earning their wings.
That’s a lot of hurdles to jump through before getting online, but flight simmers are known for going the extra mile for an experience they believe in – be it investing in a £200 flight stick or performing air traffic control duties so that others may have fun.
Mad Catz are one of the few publishers/developers investing in the marginalised simulation genre at this time and it’ll be very interesting to see how it pans out for them.
