Devloper expects half a million players by next week.
Over 420,000 gamers have taken up the zombie survival Arma 2 mod DayZ.
The mod’s creator Dean Hall confirmed the player count at Eurogamer’s Rezzed event suggesting that number could be as many as half a million players within the next seven days.
“Currently we’re running 22,000 concurrent at full peak, and 10,000 off peak, which is pretty huge numbers considering the original data structure and system was designed to handle 100 concurrents, and two servers,” Hall said during his developer session.
“We now have 1000 servers. We’re getting 110,000 players in a 24 hour period at the moment.”
Like a viral outbreak itself, DayZ has been an explosive success and has seen sales of ArmA 2 sky-rocket as players dabble with the popular mod.
Hall, who works as a multiplayer designer for ArmA developer Bohemia Interactive, hopes that DayZ may turn into its own standalone game, possible free-to-play.
