Why Ezio is a superior Assassin to Altair

Even Sebastien Puel, the producer of Assassin's Creed 2 agrees

Altair became a gaming icon when the original Assassin's Creed was released in 2007. He was bold, abrasive and undeniably cool. But the medieval maestro may have met his match when newcomer, Ezio Auditore di Firenze, dons the white hooded tunic in November.

There wasn't anything wrong with the original protagonist, but he wasn't the easiest character to empathise with. He was dry and angry most of the time, without showing any likeable traits. Sebastian Puel, producer of Assassin's Creed 2, appears to agree "Ezio is at first sight a man with a lot of charisma and presence. Ezio is warmer and is a free soul opposed to the colder warrior that Altair was in the first game."

The likeable playboy from Florence uses his charisma to manipulate those around him and offers gamers more methods to kill their target. Ezio also has a better arsenal with two hidden blades, rather than one and he keeps both ring fingers. Being friends with Leonardo Da Vinci also comes in handy, as he provides transport and the destructive hand-cannon. Mr Di Firenze uses his brains and doesn't just attack in the daylight. He also lurks in the murky waters of Venice so we guess that maybe Altair smelt better.

If you want to know what happened to Altair, you'll need a PSP. Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines is set after the original game and feeds directly into the sequel. Although it's hard to see how anyone can prefer Altair - he may have proven himself and collected hundreds of flags along the way, but he can't glide around or shoot people in the face.

All the complaints of the original, have been taken to heart by the developers and the sequel seems better in every way. We'll find out more in November, but for the time being, I know which Assassin I prefer...
