Today there's the World Cup final, the British Grand Prix and the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond, but forget all that because the following game-related selections in our weekly spotlight have nothing to do with balls or fast cars. Take it away:
Animal Crossing -
Every gamer loves Nintendo, whether they admit it or not. Some of their games are cutesy and aimed at a younger audience, but they allow families to play together in a way no other developer offers. The first highlight this week is the result of a story posted on IGN's forums which was subsequently lovingly illustrated by ONESOUND from Japanese website, This is Game. Not only is the story incredibly touching, but it shows how games can effect people in ways that most of us would never comprehend.
Team Fortress 2 and The Curse of the Golden Wrench -
This week Valve created a frenzy in the Team Fortress 2 community by randomly distributing one hundred Golden Wrenches and immortalising the recipients on the official game's blog. It's fair to say that we were definitely victims of gold fever in the office and despite playing for a ridiculous amount of time we were out of luck. We were going to write a blog detailing our obsession, but wouldn't you know it, somebody beat us to the punch. Bobby Miller via Icrontic details the phenomenon and how the one hundred golden wrench owners have become gaming celebrities overnight.
Black Mesa Research Facility -
Last but not least we have for you something a little more fun. A team of designers have constructed the ultimate tribute to Half Life 2 - a website for the Black Mesa Research Facility. There are a ton of corny lab photos, multiple references to the Hazardous Environment Suit, Theoretical Physics and a welcome statement written by Dr Wallace Breen. It's fun to mess around with this brilliantly designed site for a few minutes with a tongue firmly planted in one's cheek.
As usual, all of the links for today's selections can be found on the right and if you think something is worthy of a mention in this weekly spotlight, please send an email to PCGZine@gamerzines.com
