There's nothing more soul destroying than getting stuck in the first five minutes of an adventure game. Not to worry though, as GamerZines has your back and we'll walk you through the opening scenario in Tales of Monkey Island: Rise of the Pirate God.

MI Rise of the Pirate God
The small island on which you are marooned.
The first thing you'll have to do is get Guybrush out of his freshly dug grave by clicking the dirt surrounding the gravestone. He'll soon emerge sporting a ghostly new look, but at least he has his hand back.

MI Rise of the Pirate God
The only way to get free is to dig yourself out.
You're met with three points of interest- a grog dispensing vending machine, a dog and a surly ferryman. Walk over to the cloaked figure and exhaust all of the dialogue options regarding his boat, outfit and grog machine. You'll need to somehow pay him two gold coins to get you to the next area of the afterlife but as always Guybrush is broke.

Notice that the ferryman's gondola is inexplicably clean despite being in a disgustingly dirty river, let's change that shall we? Use the dirt on the boat which will distract your would-be escort for just a moment, allowing you to 'borrow' one note from his conveniently placed tip jar.

MI Rise of the Pirate God
Grog: The cause and solution to all of life's problems.
Walk over to the vending machine, use the note on the slot, choose the regular grog button and then return to the ferryman to repeat the soiling process. Once you have another freshly stolen bill simple use it on the grog machine once more and instead of electing to get more grog, press the coin return mechanism. Ta-dah! Two gold coins to pay the ferryman. Hold your horses though, you're not quite ready to go to the next stage yet.

MI Rise of the Pirate God
Cute pooch, he'll be important in the future.
If you walk around the rest of the island you'll see a very cute pooch, who's enthusiastically bounding around various graves. Interact with him and Guybrush will tell you that you haven't made friends with him just yet, make a mental note that you've seen the dog as you'll run into his thoughtless owner in the future. There's also a bunch of gravestones to look at, each offering a humorous tale or two so take in a few of those and then walk over to the ferryman again.

MI Rise of the Pirate God
Some well placed dirt distracts all ferrymen.
Offer him two gold coins from the machine, accept his offer to begin your journey and you'll be on your way to the crossroads.
