As we rapidly approach 2010 it's time to say goodbye to the noughties and celebrate some of the most influential games of the past ten years. You may agree with some choices and dismay at others, but rest assured there is a reason for every selection which we'll explain in due course.
10. The Sims (2000 - PC)
Will Wright's most accomplished achievement in gaming has not only been an incredible earner for EA, but introduced millions of non-gamers to the PC platform. The original chapter had a simplicity which subsequent titles have lacked and its design wasn't intimidating, even to the most inexperienced of players. Many hardcore gamers dismiss accessibility, but this was first title of the decade to show the untapped potential of the mass market. We'll forgive Maxis for the countless expansion packs, as long as they let us use the 'rosebud' cheat some more.

What is left to say about the first console specific release on our list? This title propelled Infinity Ward to become one of the most successful development houses in the world. The original Call of Duty was an impressive achievement in 2001, but Modern Warfare completely blew it out of the water. Successfully combining a short but brilliant single player campaign with addictive persistent multiplayer, the console world wasn't the same after this release. This title is hugely significant because it represents Activision's rise to dominance over the rest of the gaming world.
8. Battlefield 2 (2005 - PC)
Importance is a hard thing to measure, but there's no doubt that this first person shooter was one of the first to inspire true teamwork amongst 32 strangers. DICE mastered modern day combat years before Infinity Ward and established a thriving multiplayer scene, which is still going strong today. Mastering helicopters was an acute but particularly rewarding challenge - even today elaborate stunt videos are still being pimped on YouTube. This is one of the few games on this list that has truly stood the test of time.
We'll have more for you tomorrow and every day until the end of 2009. It has been one hell of a decade!
