Only one story dominated video games coverage this week and that was the bumper Modern Warfare 3 leak, but for all the verified speculation there were some other great journalistic feats too. Here are some of the best stories we took at look at this week:
Why Kotaku did a bad thing -
Well, we had to refer to gaming’s greatest ever leak somewhere, but this editorial approaches Kotaku’s revelations in a whole new light; was the news outlet right to leak unreleased details of Modern Warfare 3? The answer to that question is more complicated than you might think and suggests some uneasy conclusions about the "symbiotic" relationship between games journalists and publishers.
WoW in Decline -
Despite being released in 2005, World of Warcraft is still by far the most successful MMO on the planet, but this month word emerged that the game had experienced a downturn in subscribers over the past financial year. This has led to some commentators to speculate that the online juggernaut is on the way out, but this article from Gamasutra was one of the few editorials to not only point out why player numbers are falling, but also how Blizzard can attract gamers back. The language gets a bit technical at times, but it does provide a great insight into one of the industry’s most successful endeavours.
GamesRadar remembers Macho Man Randy Savage -
Okay we’re cheating here a bit but given the subject matter we hope you forgive us. Last Friday saw the tragic passing of WWE legend Macho Man Randy Savage, and seeing as the talented entertainer was in the Sports Entertainment business for most of his adult life with many an appearances in a host of video games, it’s only fitting that games websites paid their tributes to Mr Savage. GamesRadar’s is one of the more touching tributes out there and we strongly recommend everyone give their special video a watch.
