Even though the annual Games Developer Conference was over a week ago, footage of two of the biggest game engines on the showfloor have made their way onto the internet and needless to say they look astounding. Unreal Engine 3 Samaritan Real-Time Demo -
First up with have Epic’s latest tweaks to their Unreal 3 Engine. Now this technology is getting on in years, but by viewing this three minute demo linked on the right, you really wouldn’t think so. It all gets a little bit Bladerunner, but the way this technology deals with rain and skin textures, you’ll swear you’ll be looking at a real-time movie at some moments. This is from the makers of Unreal Tournament and Gears of War, so keep an eye out for the inevitable kerb stomp moment.

Can Crytek knock Epic off their industry leading perch? Who knows, but this trailer takes a more nuts and bolts approach to games development and not only shows off some amazing visuals but also the tools which game makers will utilise in their engine. We aren’t going to pretend we know what we’re talking about when referring to Maya or any other creative software, but this trailer boasts some incredible lighting technology and one of the more memorable ATVs around.
