The World’s Oldest Battlefield Player -
When we look at that huge pile of unplayed games stacked up around the TV, we yearn for the days when we can retire and have enough time to enjoy every game we want without work getting in the way. This video introduces Jaap, a retired radio DJ who enjoys playing copious amounts of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and is very much living the dream. We write this without any hint of sarcasm, but this guy is an inspiration. Shine on your crazy diamond!
This week Team Fortress 2 went free-to-play and instead of heaping more praise on the excellent Meet the Medic video produced by Valve (oops!), we’ve gone for something a bit more left field. The short video produced by Gmodexpo is funny, silly and gratuitously violent, so viewer discretion is advised.
Super Meat Boy: Cutting Room Floor –
So few developers give fans a glimpse into what might have been, but Team Meat has produced a blog offering a new perspective on the development of the acclaimed downloadable platformer, Super Meat Boy. Alternate costumes, animation prototypes, early cutscenes and other dropped features are all laid bare in this fascinating and revealing article.
Garrus Vakarian Mass Effect 2 Costume -
We tend not to link to cosplay videos, just because they are usually an excuse to check out a lady in a skimpy outfit, but rest assured this excellent piece of engineering finesse is genuinely impressive. Garrus is one of our favourite Mass Effect characters and seeing him leap into the real world, via an expertly put together costume, is something that deserves extra attention.
Sonic celebrated his 20-year anniversary this week, but instead of talking more about the blue hedgehog which has well and truly burnt his bridges with the modern gamer, let’s focus on the shooter which gave birth to online multiplayer. Bethesda has put together a brilliant retrospective which includes interview footage taken from the QuakeWorld Launch Event in 1996 and some very interesting quotes from John Carmack.
