So ArenaNet just sent us this, what could it mean?

Published on January 8th, 2014

Our anticipation builds for the next update, thanks to a cryptic message inscribed on a metronome.

Being game journalists it isn’t rare for us to occasionally receive odd things in the mail, but even we were surprised when ArenaNet and NCSoft sent us a specially branded metronome, inscribed with a rather cryptic message.

Pictures of this piece are located below.

So ArenaNet just sent us this, what could it mean?

If you're a fan of Guild Wars 2, you'll recognise the bottom logo. The top one reveals the manufacturer of the metronome.

Undoubtedly this strange gift has something to do with the next Guild Wars 2 update set to launch on January 21st, which will be the first of three updates that concludes the deluge of Living Story content that has been added to ArenaNet’s MMORPG consistently over the past year.

So ArenaNet just sent us this, what could it mean?

If you look on the back of the metronome, you'll find this inscription.

To save straining your eyes trying to decipher our incredibly wonky camera work,  here’s what the message reads:

 Thump, Thump. Time to jump.

Wipe all resistance from your mind

There’s a secret deep below to find

If you’d only seen the things I’ve seen

You’d wake up screaming from The Dream

This next part will sting, but it brings me joy

Sometimes to change you must destroy

A fire is rising you cannot contain

Tyria will burn, while I remain.

We believe this is meant to be a message from the crazed villainess Scarlet Briar herself, due to the reference to “The Dream” which all Sylvari experience care of the Pale Tree prior to birth. Additionally the sentence “Tyria will burn” undoubtedly references the continent changing events which ArenaNet has promised will hit the in-game continent once this Living Story concludes.

Undoubtedly there’s more information to gleam from the above passage, for instance what could “There’s a secret deep below to find” mean? Is this a reference to a new Elder Dragon emerging? We don’t know for sure, but we have our top men working to decipher this artifact as we speak…

Top… men.
