Transformers: The Game review for PlayStation 3
Whether you’re decrepit
enough to remember
the original Transformers
craze or are happily experiencing
your first wave of “robots in disguise”
hype, there’s no denying the appeal
of massive mechs knocking the
rivets out of each other while puny
humanoids try to avoid getting
caught in the crossfire. The movie is
one of the most entertaining actionfests
of recent years and this game
version does a reasonable job of
capturing all that kickass blockbuster
action fun.
In a crowd-pleasing twist you
get to play as a range of different
Trannies from both sides of the
Autobot/Decepticon divide, taking
in everything from flying missions
with the evil Starscream to burningaround-
city objectives in the guise of Pontiac Solstice dude Jazz. The
good guy missions tend to be of
the protect earthlings and fellow
Autobots variety, while those
naughty Decepticons get to blow
stuff up, but whoever you’re playing
as events follow a fairly standard
pattern: race to your destination
in the allotted time while battling
robot drones along the way; fight
one of the main characters; travel
to another location; complete
objective; and then it’s on to the
next, suspiciously similar, task. It’s
like a simplified, robotic take on
GTA’s mission-based structure and
although there’s the considerable
appeal of *being* a Transformer, the
chronic lack of gameplay variety
eventually becomes wearing.
