At Sony’s ill-fated E3 press conference in 2005, Sony demonstrated what they claimed to be “target footage” of the next Killzone game, running on PS3. As the trailer graced the screen, the entire auditorium’s jaws dropped - what we saw was something that looked so incredible, so realistic, and was so gobsmackingly amazing, it couldn’t possibly be running on a PS3. Somewhat sadly, our concerns were well placed, and after the conference had finished, details began to leak out that the footage we’d been treated to was actually pre-rendered (i.e. not running on a PS3), and was created by Blur Studio, a CGI animation company based in the heart of California.
A few weeks before this year’s E3, Sony sent out invites to a select group of journalists, inviting them to the official unveiling of Killzone 2. The first time the game had been seen in over two years, speculation was running rife, and the air of anticipation was somewhat lower than expected, thanks to an unimpressive screenshot that had been released to USA Today just a few hours earlier. Cometh the day, and cometh the unveiling, could Sony really live up to all the hype?
