inFamous review for the PS3

Infamous sees you playing as Cole, a superhero in Empire City who leaches abilities off fallen enemies to gradually become an unstoppable force. As you gain new powers, the gameplay becomes alot more open as you have the strength and skill to tackle multiple enemies at a time in a variety of devastating ways. Yet Sucker Punch fumbles the ball slightly with the former. Cole might have the power of electricity, but he's lacking a little spark in combat situations, often forced into cowering behind cover by turret guns and rocket launchers. It's not until the story reaches its highly charged climax that Cole really gets to turn the tables on the gun-toting gangs that have taken over Empire City. We've a few gripes with the repetition, too. The sewer sections where Cole reactivates the substations to light up each area offer some engaging platform challenges, but each one merely feels like a slightly rejigged retread of the previous sojourn underground. The city itself doesn't have the personality of a Gotham or a Metropolis, either – its grey and brown exteriors conveying post-apocalyptic gloom a little too effectively – while Cole himself belongs to that peculiarly gravel-throated new breed of videogame ‘everymen' – gruff and unnecessarily bad-tempered, he's hardly the most likeable lead.
