DJ Hero preview for the PS3
Activision reckons this is its ‘most innovative title of the year'. But being
old and import-savvy, we remember Konami's Beatmania doing a very
similar thing in arcades and on PS2s across Japan for the last 12 years.
But while the series is still doing well in the East, it's never made it over
here. Can Activision do for dance music what Guitar Hero did for rock?
The game's success hinges on whether there's an audience for DJ
mimicry – Guitar Hero tapped into rock fans' inner Hendrix, but are dance
music fans too cool to be playing with a virtual platter? Either way, we
like what we've seen so far. The scrolling display now resembles a neverending
piece of vinyl, with coloured gems popping up to represent the
two records your virtual Oakenfold is spinning simultaneously.
