Lord of the Rings has been
running for less than two
years, with six free updates
expanding the corner of Middle
Earth (Eriador) where the game
started. That's a whole mass of
adventuring in Tolkien's world, and
it has created a devoted audience.
Here's a thought, though: they
haven't even played any of their
trump cards yet. The biggest icons
in the books may have shown up,
and there's charm in Rivendell and
the stalking Nazgul, but the big
adventure moments from the
books haven't been seen yet.
This, the first expansion pack, is
Turbine playing the initial of their
many aces. Moria, the enormous
complex which Gandalf leads
the Fellowship through is a
quintessential moment from the
book, which has resonated through
popular culture. When people
talk about Tolkien's influence on
Dungeons & Dragons, they're really
talking about Moria – a group of
people heading underground to
face challenges and find secret
things. It's the original, and finally
we get to go down there.
