Pirates of the Burning Sea review

Pirates of the Burning Sea review

It's time to take to the high seas with Pirates of the Burning Sea, an MMORPG with not an elf or an orc in sight. As a fledgling pirate you'll need a ship and a crew to get you started, and you'll be able to explore, fight and plunder your way around the Caribbean setting. There's a strong PvP element to Pirates of the Burning Sea, and quests aplenty to keep you busy. Did Pirates shiver our timbers? Find out in our full review in this issue of MMOZine, and don't miss our guide to getting started, also in this issue.

Pirates of the Burning Sea review
Ten million people are now paying to play World of Warcraft. You can see why: that lurid fantasy world is so enticing, and so brilliantly imagined. Nevertheless for some of us there's the nagging feeling that we really don't want to spend our time mashing goblins or frolicking with the night elves. Perhaps you'd rather do something rather less fantastical, something like plundering the high seas of the 18th century? Yeah, that's more like it. So thank Davey Jones' Locker for Pirates of the Burning Sea, a genuinely different massively multiplayer game with a personality and penchant for piratical behaviour that will bring a glimmer of happiness to even the blackest gamer's heart.

Inspired by Johnny Depp's Hollywood antics this pirate revival might have been, but Pirates of the Burning Sea is very much its own game. Set in the Caribbean of the 1720s, we get to fight as English privateers, Spanish smugglers, place on dry land, however, is only a small fragment of what the game has to offer. Like Sid Maier's Pirates, or the less famous Age Of Sail series, Pirates of the Burning Sea puts you in charge of your own sailing ship, which can be upgraded and outfitted according to the depth of your pocket.
