You are a human. You are male, or female. You are not an orc, an elf, an alien, or a cat; nor will you ever be. Everyone else playing this game is also a human, male or female, and yet, as you wander around, you'll be surprised at the diversity of characters you see. It's certainly never boring. Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa isn't unique in the fact that everyone begins their journey in its MMO world from the same point - and on the same side - but it is unusual. Think about it, though. Tabula Rasa. Blank slate. What you are at the start is not about what you will become. That's the message of the game and the ‘ethical' dimension to some of its quests - because uniquely what you do in Tabula Rasa will affect available quests later on. Don't get too hooked up on painting your character's armour before you begin, for example. As soon as you start collecting loot, your appearance will rapidly change - and at any point you can fairly cheaply create a paint box to change the look of your armour. Unlike certain large MMOs we could mention, a powerful character in Tabula Rasa is not a goal you set and then level towards, adding on the ‘right' skill tree buffs from an ever narrower selection. Instead, it's about trying out new things and enjoying earning rewards, rather than having them already spent for you. Of course, as we noted in the review, there's more than one area where the tutorial system is sadly lacking, so let MMOZine be your guide in this new and strange world.
