Your typical MMO is often set on a single planet. Whereas the bigger games may let you explore maybe two or three planets, at the other end of the scale, some smaller titles can often restrict you to a single continent. With EVE Online, this couldn't be further from the truth. A universal truth. For those of you new to EVE, it's probably best described as a massively multiplayer online version of Elite (or, for those of you too young to remember Elite, it's a bit like X3), which lets you explore an entire galaxy, and the vast reaches of space within it, trading with other players, fighting off pirates, and exploring the outer limits of the cosmos as you go. Offering a level of freedom that's not often seen in MMOs, yet alone games in general, EVE now has a huge 200,000 subscribers (all of which, somewhat incredibly, inhabit the same game world), and as way of celebration, CCP has seen fit to release the latest EVE expansion, the sexily named EVE: Trinity. We've been spending some hands-on time with the latest addition and we're spaced!

Before we get stuck into the improvements, we think we'd better spend some time explaining exactly how EVE: Online works. Putting you in charge of your own ship in a world that's full of rival playerrun corporations, the world of EVE is a world of cutthroat business that you can choose to get into, or oppose. Plunging you headfirst into outer space, everything around you is affected by the player-run corporations that inhabit it, and signing up for these has many benefits, often bringing with it cheaper ships, and, of course, the added benefit of having a group of higher level players around you with much more firepower.
