Guild Wars interview MMO
Guild Wars interview
Guild Wars is four years old, and to celebrate we caught up with Mike O'Brien, studio head of Arenanet and one of the creators of Guild Wars. As fun as talking about the success of the MMO is, we also managed to sneak a few Guild Wars 2 pointers out of him, including setting and the instanced nature of the gameplay. So Guild Wars fans, read the full interview in this issue of MMOZine for a trip down memory lane and some tiny tastes of Guild Wars 2.

Guild Wars interview
The power and popularity
of Guild Wars is well known
to MMOZine. When we
launched Issue 1 we teamed up with
NCsoft to give away an exclusive
mini-pet for the game. The idea
was that we'd give away 40,000
codes to our readers over the first
two months. What happened was
that readers literally melted our
servers downloading the magazine,
resulting in several hasty upgrades
(tripling server capacities in a
matter of hours) and over 100,000
downloads of the magazine in
under 48 hours. But we also learnt
how understanding and loyal the
Guild Wars community was, which
is why on the fourth anniversary of
the launch of the game, we took the
opportunity to catch up with cofounder
of ArenaNet – developer of
Guild Wars – Mike O'Brien.
When you first created Guild
Wars, did you realise just how
popular it would become?
We thought it would be big, but we
didn't know how big. No one sells over five million copies of their first
game. The response from the player
community has been amazing.
