Guide to MMOs tutorial in MMOZine

If you're just starting out in MMO playing, then your new game can be a daunting place - it's a far cry from the totally private, one-person gaming experience you're used to. Suddenly you're surrounded by other real people, and contending with them can be as difficult and dangerous as the high level monsters or villains that you'll face in the game. Avoid all doubt about how to make friends and influence people with our MMO tutorial, A Guide to Surviving Other Worlds - we'll tell you how to get used to your MMO universe, what the main pitfalls of being a newbie are and how to avoid alienating everyone on your first day. Guide to MMOs tutorial
Whether you're a veteran MMOer with a gaming history as long as Blizzard's patch notes, or a total newcomer to this monumentally successful gaming subculture (more on ‘newbies' and ‘n00bs' later). There are certain guidelines and rules both written and unwritten, to which the player should at least have a relatively sound understanding. Whether you choose to embrace them or not is up to you, but you should at least posses the knowledge before deciding whether or not to make use of it.

MMOs have been around for a long enough time for the more experienced of us to realise that regardless of whether you're running missions for Darth Vader, trying to dethrone Thrall, or following the directions of Gandalf the Grey, MMORPGs at their core, share a lot of common ground. For all of the gaming industry's efforts to take MMOs to the next step, they're also particularly cautious not to get too far ahead of themselves. The real beauty of the genre is the ability for these games to provide a unique experience, while maintaining a good degree of familiarity from one title to the next.

With this familiarity comes not only the ease with which new subscribers can dive into the latest MMO titles, but a familiarity with what each game's community expects from you as a fellow player, guildmate, and opponent.

What follows is far from a complete study of MMO etiquette, but rather an introduction to that subject and more importantly, how to make the most of gaming's most social genre.
