Sample this free-to-play game before it’s canned on Friday, 29th March.
Mythic Entertainment has announced that the free-to-play MOBA Warhammer: Wrath of Heroes will close on Friday, 29th March.
Producer of the game, James Casey has penned his thoughts on the game’s unfortunate closure in an official blog post linked here. A selection of that statement is shown below:
“Launched in Beta just over a year ago, the free-to-play battle arena version of Warhammer Online was a grand experiment. We were able to test new server technology, learn more about the free-to-play market, and engage in endless quick, down and dirty, three-way battles any time of day or night. On all of these fronts, we were able to make great inroads and insights and deliver a fast and frenetic game,” wrote Casey.
“As a producer for this game from the start, I am proud of the hard work and effort that made the game possible and I feel sad that it is not able to carry on. I think we created something special and I would not trade the time creating it or playing it (on all those Friday Fight Fests and anonymously almost every day) for anything. “
We had high hopes for Warhammer: Wrath of Heroes. It’s accessible take on the highly competitive MOBA genre harnessed the appeal of the Warhammer franchise in some really inventive ways, with new heroes being added to the service on a regular basis. However it appears the amount of revenue associated with this “experiment” wasn’t enough to secure its long-term existence.
Wrath of Heroes starred in issue 37 of MMOZine, released in 2012, and you can still read that special issue here.
