Fans of the recently defunct superhero MMORPG club together to make all new experience.
Last year the MMO world was dealt a surprising blow when City of Heroes was put out of service and the developers behind the game, Paragon Studios, were laid off. The closure of the game on November 30th left thousands of gamers without an online home, however all hope is not lost.
A growing group of City of Heroes fans are currently working together to build an entirely new spiritual successor to Paragon Studio’s beloved MMORPG, and they’ve released the first teaser trailer for their work:
The Phoenix Project is the work of new entity Missing Worlds Media, a studio comprised of several independent designers, programmers and artists; most of whom met via the Titan Network’s ‘Save City of Heroes’ forums.
A new website has also been launched for the project, and even though Phoenix is not directly associated with City of Heroes or its owner NCSOFT, it’s good to see that at least the spirit of the game lives on months after servers have expired.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on The Phoenix Project over the coming months. We have our fingers crossed it doesn’t turn into vapour-ware, as so many fan-made endeavours do.
