Former lead content designer Joel Bylos takes over from Ragnar Tørnquist.
Even though The Secret World has a new game director, we suspect the focus will remain the same.
Today Funcom has announced that former lead content designer Joel Bylos has been placed in charge of The Secret World, as game director.
Usually this kind of internal shuffle wouldn’t be news, but with it comes with the announcement that acclaimed storyman Ragnar Tørnquist is taking step back from the subscription MMO, assuming the more flexible role of creative director.
We had the privilege of interviewing the passionate Aussie Joel in MMOZine 37, and we can attest to his passion and expertise when it comes to game development.
“Being given the opportunity to lead the game into a bold, new future is definitely a dream come true for me. I am very proud of what we as a team have created with The Secret World, and it is truly a brilliant canvas that will allow us to create more groundbreaking MMO experiences for many years to come,” stated the developer who previously worked on Age of Conan as lead quest developer, before snapping up the role as lead content designer role on The Secret World, and subsequently becoming game director.
“The Secret World is only really getting started, and with a game world that draws upon our own, real world, there is no limit to what sort of amazing stories we can tell and fantastic locations we can visit in the upcoming content updates.”
“As creative director, I will continue to be involved with the story and universe and overall direction, but I will also take a few steps back and let Joel lead the team and maintain the vision and direction for the game, together with the very talented Scott Junior, who takes over my duties as producer,” Ragnar stated in an official letter to the community, linked here.
It is a bit sad that Ragnar Tørnquist won’t be involved in The Secret World as much as he used to, but we’re hoping the extra time on his hands might lead to the acclaimed adventure game Dreamfall getting a sequel.
One can only hope…
