Funcom adopt a new one-time fee approach for their modern day MMORPG.
Now anyone who buys the game gets permanent access to servers, with future updates requiring players to pay upfront to access new content. This new payment model isn’t quite free-to-play, it’s actually more in line with Guild Wars 2′s model, which requires a one-time fee in order to start playing.
Any new player who decides to pick up The Secret World now will get all four major updates which have been added to the MMO since launch for free, but the Issue #5 update will require a small payment around $5. Interestingly that piece of content along with the ‘Initiate Pack’ which includes new starter weapons, a Blood Raven pet and additional clothing, will be given to all those who bought The Secret World prior to December 31st for free, in order to thank them for their early adoption.
Like a lot of formerly subscription-only MMOs, The Secret World will still offer the option to stump up a monthly fee for the following benefits:
- Time Accelerator (Clickable item which increases experience gain for defeating monsters by 100% for 1 hour, 16 hour cool-down – only usable by Members and Grand Masters)
- $10 worth of Bonus Points (given out every month) which can be used to purchase expansion content if desired
- Item-of-the-month gift (given out every month)
- 10% discount to everything in the in-game store
Despite being one of the best MMOs to be released in years, The Secret World has struggled to find a captive audience for its brilliant world design, compelling characters and intriguing modern day setting. Here’s hoping this new payment model will attact more players to what is a fantastic online experience.
