Mirkwood is a huge expansion and is set to change the way many gamers take part in LOTRO's universe. The most crucial improvement is in the combat and Turbine have invested a lot of time and effort into making sure fighting feels much more fluid than before.

In an exclusive interview with us, we asked Jeffrey Steefel how complicated the process was and how his team implemented the new combat system:

"It's probably the most intensive thing in beta, something that we'll be working on until the moment we launch and probably a while after. Probably the first time we do a patch there's going to be some changes because it's so complex and affects everybody."

Gamers will also be able to choose how fluid and fast they want combat to be.

"The default now is for some of the animations to be less complex and play more quickly and snappy. But if you miss that kind of feel, you can actually go into the options and adjust the way animations are played," said Steefel, "so you can have your own balance between how fast and how fluid you want it."

We are all about choice, especially in MMOs, and offering gamers a chance to dictate how they want combat to work indicates just how radical an approach Turbine are adopting with LOTRO.
