All expansions for MMOs are tricky, especially with a title so complex as Lord of the Rings Online. We got in touch with Turbine to discuss how successful the launch of Siege of Mirkwood has been so far, and they seem very upbeat on the success of their first digital-only expansion:

"The launch of Mirkwood has been very smooth. It's an active time in Middle-Earth with players exploring Mirkwood for the first time, checking out the updates in the Lone Lands and trying out the new Skirmish system which is already a big hit with our players." Explained Turbine's Director of Communications, Adam Mersky.

No download numbers were shared with us, which is no surprise considering how early the product is in its cycle, but it will be interesting to see how a full-blown expansion pack does without the support of retail and boxed product. It can't have the high street retailers dancing in the streets to see an MMO shifting away from traditional retail, even though it's easy to see why such a distribution method will be perfect for the audience.

Mr Mersky summed their success: "It has been an outstanding launch and a great way to wrap up 2009 and set the tone for 2010 which is going to be a big year for LOTRO."

Whatever happens in the future, Turbine are sure to keep their cards to their chest, and we can't find out yet whether all future expansions for the title will be this sort of size and digital only, or whether a bigger add-on will go back to retail.
