NCsoft caused quite a lot of interest recently when one of their Aion managers appeared to state that the game would be getting an annual expansion pack. Reported originally on vg247.com, '"There will be at least one major update a year," said brand manager Christian-Peter Heimbach, talking in an interview published today.'
Several sites took this to mean not just content patches, but complete expansion packs. We contacted Christian- Peter directly ourselves for more details, but he went uncharacteristically shy.
Undeterred we dug our way into NCsoft and forced them at gunpoint to explain themselves.* At this point, they had this to say: "For your information: the content updates Cristian-Peter Heimbach referred to in that interview are digital, free content updates, on the same level as almost all MMOs do these days. He wasn't referring to any retail product / official expansions.
"We'll be following a global update plan for Aion, so not too long after release in Korea we'll as well push updates out in our other regions, that of course includes NA and EU."

That said if the content patches continue to be as meaningful as the 1.5 patch applied prior to launch, the players will be rather pleased at continuing to get such upgrades for free, rather than paid for expansion packs.
* This part probably didn't happen.**
** But the response is genuinely from them.***
*** Just thought we'd better clarify that bit.
