If you are an ex-subscriber the Hyborian MMO, Age of Conan, you may receive e-mail from developers Funcom soon, if you haven't already.

It seems that, as part of maintenance, Funcom are deleting all characters that are below level 20 on inactive accounts.

In order to ensure the characters, their names and progress stay intact players are invited to resubscribe to the game, along with their usual free time offers for returning adventurers.

The terms and conditions for most MMOs do state that they reserve the right to delete inactive characters and/or accounts, but very few developers actually go any further than adding this small line into their legal blurb.

Funcom has stated this move is to free up space in their database, but it comes across more like a last-ditch attempt to get players to re-subscribe before the launch of AoC's expansion pack.

It's well known that Age of Conan has had a difficult time since its launch, and the game has seen a huge dip in subscriber numbers.

Will the threat of character deletion see players coming back, or is it more likely to put them off if there is always the chance their lower level characters could disappear the next time they choose to take a break from payment?

For Funcoms sake, I hope it's the former, but sadly I can't see things going in that direction.
