Cryptic Studios and Perfect World Entertainment have announced that Star Trek Online will transition from a subscription to a free-to-play model on January 17th, 2012.
The news was picked up by Videogamer and there hasn’t been any more information posted regarding in-game shops, pricing or how existing subscribers will be treated.
It has been known that Star Trek Online was heading this way for a while now and it’s good to see that a relaunch date has been set.
SOE’s DC Universe Online was the most recent premium MMO to jump the subscription bandwagon and since then they’ve reported that player numbers are up ten fold. It’s expected that Star Trek Online will experience a similar hike in activity come next year.
