Sony Online Entertainment has released a statement which has confirmed that over 24.6 million accounts were compromised days before the infamous security breach which affected PlayStation Network users last month.
"Our ongoing investigation of illegal intrusions into Sony Online Entertainment systems has discovered that hackers may have obtained personal customer information from SOE systems. We are today advising you that the personal information you provided us in connection with your SOE account may have been stolen in a cyber-attack," a statement on SOE’s official website explains.
"Stolen information includes, to the extent you provided it to us, the following: name, address (city, state, zip, country), email address, gender, birthdate, phone number, login name and hashed password. "
Payment information for US and UK customers were not affected, but the same cannot be said for 12,700 users in Germany, Austria, Netherlands and Spain who were not so lucky and they will be contacted "promptly."
As a result of these developments SOE has turned off all game services in order to enhance their network’s security.
No date has been announced for when DC Universe Online, Star Wars Galaxies and Everquest et al. servers will be live again.
We’ll have more news on these developments when they emerge.
