Star Wars: The Old Republic will not require gamers to have an Origin account or download the client for EA’s digital service, instead everything from patching to playing will be launched via the game’s client.
This news broke yesterday evening when BioWare’s Stephen Reid posted the following on the game’s official forums:
“Regardless of what other games may choose to do in their integration with Origin’s desktop client, here’s what our situation is:
You are not required to use the Origin desktop client to download, patch or play the game client for Star Wars: The Old Republic.
This applies whether you purchase The Old Republic via Origin.com or from a retailer in boxed form. You will not be forced to install the Origin desktop client.
There are still various consumer benefits to the client itself, but it’s not required for The Old Republic.”
Obviously this stance may change when TOR is finally released, but for the time being at least this is the situation.
EA’s digital games service is currently attracting attention for its controversial terms of service, which allows the publisher to reserve the right to collect and pass on information regarding your PC’s operating system, application usage, software, software usage and peripheral hardware to third parties.
