Last week news broke that Icarus Studios, is working with GamersFirst to help develop their ongoing subscription-based MMO Fallen Earth.
It was unclear what exactly the collaboration was all about but today Massively has shed light on the relationship, as they quizzed the free-to-play publisher’s Darek-Connole to find out what exactly this new relationship is all about.
“We see the game and we see so much potential. It’s such an awesome game, but there’s just a niche that’s playing it, so we’re offering them cost-savings in their backend,” he explained. “We’re also looking at putting a marketing machine behind it.”
Seeing as GamersFirst has revived formerly subscription-based APB, into a new entity dubbed APB Reloaded, Darek was also asked whether Icarus Studios were looking at a similar pay model transition for Fallen Earth.
“It’s a huge consideration because the game does already lend itself. It has an in-game store, and it already has a subscription model that has more of a premium model than a typical subscription base, so it is something we’re looking at. However, we also have to balance the current game and the current game systems. “
“Free-to-play is on the table. It’s not something I can confirm; it’s not something that I can deny. But we’re talking about all kinds of options,” he added.
The Fallen Earth community is currently preparing for the long-awaited Alpha County update and news of this collaboration, it seems, will only help get that bucket load of new content out of the door and onto servers.
What else this collaboration will bring is a mystery, but it’s clear at the very least that free-to-play is being looked at as a viable revenue model.
The plot thickens…
