Beijing-based MMO developer/publisher Perfect World has bought Cryptic Studios from Atari for $49.8 million.
Champions Online and Star Trek Online were bundled into this sales package and now comes under the remit of Cryptic Studios and Perfect World, who also run free-to-play MMOs Legend of Martial Arts and Battle of Immortals.
It is believed this acquisition will speed up the long rumoured adoption of a free-to-play model in Star Trek Online.
The news was broke by VentureBeat yesterday evening and it’s expected that Cryptic Studios will make an official statement later on today.
We’ll update this story when we hear word from the Californian outfit.
