Paragon Studios and NCsoft have announced that City of Heroes will soon adopt a free-to-play revenue model.
The formerly subscription-only MMO will relaunch later this year as City of Heroes Freedom, with players being able to enjoy over seven year’s worth of acclaimed content for absolutely free.
“Freedom is about getting more content into the hands of our players, whether they are subscribing or playing for free,” explained Brian Clayton, executive producer at Paragon Studios.
“To do this, we’ve looked at City of Heroes from the ground up and focused on three ways to enhance the experience by giving our players more choices, greater rewards and the best content we’ve ever produced. And for the first time ever, players can choose to enjoy more than seven years of content for free.”
According to the announcement players will be able to progress their character up to level 50 and enjoy hero and villain zones without having to pay a penny, however only two character slots will be available from the outset, with payment required to get more.
There will still be the option to subscribe to the game and be granted VIP status, as well as a plenty of additional content and there will be an in-game store to purchase content on a case by case basis.
More information about this transition to the free-to-play model can be found by visiting City of Heroes official website.
Unfortunately no ETA was declared regarding this update, but we’re sure that when Freedom does launch City of Heroes will experience a massive spike in popularity
