Funcom has announced that the subscription-only MMO Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures will be relaunched as a free-to-play MMO over the coming months.
Age of Conan: Unrated will allow players to enter Hyboria without having to put any money down with the option to buy items from the in-game store, or continue to pay a subscription.
"With over 1.4 million copies sold, glowing reviews for both the core game as well as the expansion, and a healthy player base ever since launch in 2008, there is no doubt that ‘Age of Conan’ has been a true success story for Funcom," explained Funcom’s Morten Larssen.
"Now we turn to another chapter in this story as we thrust ‘Age of Conan: Unrated’ into the world of free-to-play games, a gaming space that is becoming rapidly more popular and profitable across the board."
Funcom are following a precedent set by Turbine’s Lord of the Rings Online and Cryptic’s Champions Online and this transition is set to go ahead over the summer.
Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures was released in May 2008 and it’s good to see this gritty online offering get a second bite of the MMO cherry.
