NCsoft has announced that Aion will switch from a subscription only to a free-to-play model this coming February.
The move is in response to falling player numbers in Europe and the Korean publisher/developer wishes to “re-invigorate” servers with wealth of new players this transition will surely provide. Three new servers in Germany, UK and France will be formed while all present servers will remain active.
NCsoft will also team up with German publisher Gameforge in order to continue to developer the MMO, including the long anticipated 3.0 update, and provide support to players.
So what exactly will free players have to pay for? The answer isn’t much it seems.
“All classes, areas, quests, equipment, individualisations, professions and the PvP will be freely available from this date and registration will be free of charge. However, to protect our players against bots and gold sellers, several game options such as chat and trading will be restricted for starters,” reads a detailed FAQ on Aion’s official website.
“However, to protect our players against bots and gold sellers, several game options such as chat and trading will be restricted for starters. This limitation can then be removed by buying a Gold package.”
How much said Gold package will cost and the finer details of whether gamers will still be able to subscribe is still to be revealed, but we expect more news on this front very soon.
