Drive to make NCsoft change their mind about closing the superhero MMORPG gathers pace.
On Friday evening NCsoft made the surprising announcement that it was in the process of closing both City of Heroes and the developer behind the comic book MMORPG, Paragon Studios.
According to a statement obtained by IGN, City of Heroes’ servers will be closed for good on November 30th. Unsurprisingly many gamers aren’t happy about this news and one upset gamer created an online petition in the hope of changing NCsoft’s mind.
“The only ones that seem to want to have City of Heroes shut down is NCsoft themselves. The community isn’t ready for this, and neither is the development team; who is getting shoved out into the cold. City of Heroes is not responsible for the loss in NCsoft profits–other games are,” reads the petition which has been penned by Meggan Russell.
“This petition is to stop NCsoft from shutting down the game and let many of its players keep their favourite game going! The players–and developers–are not prepared to see this game go down.”
Currently the online protest has well over 9,000 signatures and more are being added every minute.
The history of petitions reversing big publisher decisions is rather chequered, but it’s hoped that the thousands of gamers currently rallying to keep City of Heroes open will at least give NCsoft something to think about. If nothing else it will show other free-to-play MMO publishers that there’s still an audience out there that’s interested in the game.
You can lend your support to this growing movement by signing the petition, which is linked here.
