‘Keep City of Heroes Online’ Petition Nears 10,000 Signatures

Published on September 3rd, 2012

Drive to make NCsoft change their mind about closing the superhero MMORPG gathers pace.

Keep City of Heroes Online Petition Nears 10,000 Signatures

It's going to take a truly heroic attempt from the community to keep open. We think they're up to the challenge...

On Friday evening NCsoft made the surprising announcement that it was in the process of closing both City of Heroes and the developer behind the comic book MMORPG, Paragon Studios.

According to a statement obtained by IGN, City of Heroes’ servers will be closed for good on November 30th. Unsurprisingly many gamers aren’t happy about this news and one upset gamer created an online petition in the hope of changing NCsoft’s mind.

“The only ones that seem to want to have City of Heroes shut down is NCsoft themselves. The community isn’t ready for this, and neither is the development team; who is getting shoved out into the cold. City of Heroes is not responsible for the loss in NCsoft profits–other games are,” reads the petition which has been penned by Meggan Russell.

“This petition is to stop NCsoft from shutting down the game and let many of its players keep their favourite game going! The players–and developers–are not prepared to see this game go down.”

Currently the online protest has well over 9,000 signatures and more are being added every minute.

The history of petitions reversing big publisher decisions is rather chequered, but it’s hoped that the thousands of gamers currently rallying to keep City of Heroes open will at least give NCsoft something to think about. If nothing else it will show other free-to-play MMO publishers that there’s still an audience out there that’s interested in the game.

You can lend your support to this growing movement by signing the petition, which is linked here.

Thank you so much for this article, and for supporting our campaign. The way that the CoX community has reacted to this announcement and the outpouring of support and solidarity has reminded me just what it is that makes this game so special.

This game means everything to us.

To all the MMOers out there – please back us. One day, your community will go through this. Please sign the petition, and help us to make the businesses that run the games we love realise that they have more options than just pulling the plug on us.

I’ll grant you all that the closure of an MMO is not in any way as bad, but the principle still holds. I quote:

“First they came for the communists,
        and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist.

Then they came for the socialists,
        and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
        and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

        Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak for me.”

Thank you for highlighting this story. MMO players, whatever your poison, it may be worth a signature.

Thanks for the kind words guys, it’s a pleasure to help out the ‘Keep City of Heroes Online’ movement any way we can.

I’ve contacted NCsoft on a range of issues associated with City of Heroes and Paragon Studios shutting down, and I hope to give you a statement from them over the next few days.

Keep up the good work guys, this petition is getting a lot of attention.

Who knows whether it’ll save City of Heroes in the long run, but what it will do is show that this game still has thousands upon thousands of active players and who knows? Perhaps another publisher may come in and save the day, it happened with Aion in Europe after all…

Hey guys! Thanks for covering this situation for the City of Heroes community. It’s great to know that our efforts aren’t going unnoticed by others.
Saving CoH is about more than just a game. It’s about a saving community and, if you will, a family that have been growing and experiencing things together for the best part of a decade.
With the various real world heroes we’ve met (and become) over the years, we’re optimistic about our chances of doing just that.

Thanks for the information. It is good to see word is getting out about the effort to save City of Heroes.

No other game gives as much control over character concept as City of Heroes, with the ability to craft unique costumes as well as create your own unique stories for those characters.

Naturally, after so long, people are very attached to those creations.

Thank-you, Gamerzines, for bringing our efforts to save our game and more importantly our community from what appears to be short-sighted spreadsheet balancing to a wider audience.

I am hoping that news on sites like yours will not only get the word out to other gamers, but galvanize our core supporters as well.

This game still has vibrant life in it. And when the end comes, as it will eventually will, both the developers that have worked on it and the players who have supported it for the better part of a decade deserve a proper ending to the stories we have all built there together.

I hate to see this game leave, CoH has been a HUGE part of my life over the last 8+ years, I started playing in March 2004, not long after that i met so many amazing friends, one of those friends introduced me to my husband, who I met in summer of 2004 in City of Heroes, we lived over 1200 miles & a country apart, We talked for days and months on end for 6+hrs a day, we finally married in Feb 2005 and been married to ever since, CoH has brought so many amazing people in my life and brought my alter ego’s to life with 100+ characters over the years, to think CoH being gone forever, I don’t want it to happen, I am ready to stand up a good fight to keep things a live, NCSoft will make the HUGEST mistake in history if they close this game down, there is so many games that are doing WORSE

Heroes NEVER give up the good fight and you know what, Villains don’t either, time to put up the biggest fight of our lives!

Sigs are now up over 11K, keep them coming!

Thank you so much for giving us the attention that we need to save a game and a community we all love so much. 8 years with City of and quite frankly I am not ready to let it go. But if it happens, I will be there until the skies of Paragon go dark.

Thank you so much for covering this! Please sign the petition – even if we can’t save our City, we show them that we’re not willing to go down without a fight! City of Heroes taught me that when the world is burning, you don’t stand by and watch, you grab a fire extinguisher and do whatever you can – even if it doesn’t seem like much at all!

I’ve been playing City of Heroes since 2004 and have been continuously subscribed, even through all the changes and transitions that have been made. I’m saddened by this closure. There are still so many things I won’t ever get to do now. I hope we, the community, find a way to continue to be heroes.

I have also met some very good friends who I never would’ve come across if it weren’t for this game. I hope it can be saved so I can continue to meet more new friends!

It is great to see the media covering the battle that the City of Heroes community is fighting. I personally want to say thank you for your support and help in spreading the goal of our community: To save City of Heroes! This game is more then just a game. Players meet new people, network and get to know the people they meet, and some connections evolve into real life friendships. The news of the game shutting down felt like NCSoft tore a hole inside me and left it empty. I can’t speak for the City of Heroes community but I am sure most feel the same way. So once again, thank you!

I would like to also thank your for taking notice of our situation. Without the support of the gaming community it would virtually an impossible battle. But Because of people at Gamerzines and others that are listening to us we may be able to at least give NCsoft something to wonder about. Also I would like to thank all of you gamers out there that is willing to support us in this cause. I know that if your gaming community was “under attack” that all of the City of Heroes community would jump to your aid. Although we may not be part of the “same” community we are all still part of one huge community of “gamers”.

Thank you for the attention to our plight Gamerzines, it is most appreciated. And the Success of a Petition is rarely so black and white. The mere fact that so many can show their outrage at this “realignment of publishing support” is in itself a means to an end. We are gamers, customers, and believers. We must not be ignored.

Thanks guys for writing about our game and our efforts to save it from going dark. For four years City of Heroes has been one of the ways my wife and I connect and serves as one of the few things we have as a mutual interest outside of church and family. It even serves as a place we can let our nephews and niece run around when they’re here visiting and can’t go outside. It keeps all of us busy when we run out of things to do or need to unwind from our other worries.

You can help us and our friends by signing the petition or if you play and don’t know how to get involved the Titan Network is serving as our rallying point. Visit them at http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/board,134.0.html to see what you can do to save the first and best super hero mmo.

      Thanks again, Para’ Dox.

Thanks for covering this Gamerzines.com! This is a huge and devoted community. I have been on City of Heroes since 2006 and never let me subscription lapse. This game had a great launch and some slow times, but has really hit it’s stride in the last few years, with the last year being it’s best. New player have 100 times more to do and explore than they did in 2006. The special effect, powers, and maps, have been exploding. If you have never tried City of Heroes, do so now. You may never get an other chance. It’s far more brilliant than anything else on the market.
