ArenaNet now confident they can manage server stress associated with increased demand.
The practice of limiting digital sales when it comes to MMORPGs is not a new phenomenon. Star Wars: The Old Republic did it last year, and last week Guild Wars 2 pulled off the same technique to manage new player arrivals on servers, while not impacting those who had already pre-ordered/purchased the game.
Well, it seems the folks at ArenaNet are now much more confident about the estimated load stress on servers now, as they’ve officially re-opened the ability to purchase the sequel via buy.guildwars2.com.
“Preserving the customer experience has always been our top priority,” said Mike O’Brien, president and co-founder of ArenaNet. “We’re supporting Guild Wars 2 for the long run. We’ll always do what it takes to deliver the best online gaming experience for our customers, even when that means throttling sales.”
Interestingly a new live-action trailer was also released to celebrate Guild Wars 2 seemingly successful launch, and in true gaming tradition it’s a little bit pretentious with direction which hinges more on beautiful actors rather than actual gameplay. Of course that’s what you get when you hire a flashy Hollywood director, in this case V for Vendetta’s and The Matrix Trilogy’s James McTeigue, involved to direct the thing.
Its expensive, lavish and almost tells you absolutely nothing about the game in question other than it’s something ‘different’ – but hey we’re sure somebody somewhere out there will find the video entertaining. If you do put a message in the comments box below, we’re genuinely intrigued to hear what you think about it. At least the Inception-like soundtrack was satisfying right?
We can’t help thinking that money could’ve been better spent focusing on the game’s unique environmental design or the intriguing plot, but then our advertising expertise isn’t quite all that. Hell we’d happily see that money spent on keeping City of Heroes open past the November closure date, but again we aren’t experts in these matters.
Thankfully we know a thing or two about what makes a good MMORPG however, and to find out our definitive verdict on Guild Wars 2, you’ll have to read the next issue of MMOZine which is out at the end of the month.

It’s really interessting that Guild Wars 2 was totally sold online and the developers had to shut down the Sales. I just purchased GW2 a few days ago, and had really no clue about that. It’s awesome.
