New CEO Ole Schreiner lays the foundations for a switch from a subscription-only model.
It’s no secret that The Secret World hasn’t performed to expectations since Funcom launched the subscription-only MMORPG last July. Developers have been laid off, a new CEO is sat atop of the studio’s corporate structure and it seems the team behind the game have “the tools” to take the game free-to-play.
“We tried leaving our options open during development so that we could launch with a different model should we have decided during development that’s what we wanted, but eventually we did settle on the subscription model and that’s what informed much of the game’s design,” Schreiner explained to Gamesindustry.biz.
“That said we definitely have the tools to turn The Secret World into a free-to-play game — or even hybrid — should we decide to do that somewhere down the line.”
It’s getting harder and harder for subscription-only games to keep their gamers entertained enough to warrant a monthly fee, at least in the numbers required to make the service profitable. Who knows whether The Secret World will transition away from that model, but one thing is for sure Funcom’s latest is really entertaining and we hope that the struggling MMO bounces back.
