Using LOTRO emotes

Tuesday, 29 May 2007
Standing around bored in LOTRO while waiting for another player to come online, I wanted to show that my character was standing around bored. This was when I discovered the LOTRO emotes. Now, you might have already used some of them - try typing "/wave" and in the Social box on the bottom left of screen, the command will appear and you can hit return and your character will wave.

My first LOTRO raid

Monday, 28 May 2007
Dropping in online the other day I was wandering around The Shire trying to find anything to do that didn't involve pies when a friend I'd made a few days ago when helping out with some bears popped into the Social window and asked if I wanted to come and help out in a Shared Quest. When I made it over to where the quest started I discovered that it wasn't just a normal quest, but one that sent you off to a "Private Instance" or a raid.

How to use LOTRO traits

Sunday, 27 May 2007
Ah, there's nothing like being new at a game, is there? Here I was thinking I was doing pretty well, when I discovered that I'd completely misunderstood how traits work in LOTRO. I got my first trait for one of my LOTRO characters a while ago and after looking into the character sheet and seeing the equipable traits, but seeing no way to actually equip them, I had assumed that these minor traits were automatically equipped, and that I would find some way to equip other ones later. Not so, my friends. In LOTRO, a trait must be equipped for it to be active on your character.

Hunter Skills Passage of Nature LOTRO

Saturday, 26 May 2007

Passage of Nature Skill for Hunters in LOTROHaving levelled up in LOTRO, I received the new skill Passage of Nature for my Hunter. You get Passage of Nature at level 12, and it allows you to search the ground for tracks. Then a dialog pops up and shows animals that are nearby so you can select one and track it. After that the skill needs a cooldown period before you can choose a new animal to track. Once you've selected an animal, it should appear as a red target symbol on your mini-map and on the main map. However, when I first used it, I selected the animal and nothing happened. When I pressed M and looked on the map, I realised I could see the animal, but not on the mini-map, so I right clicked on the mini-map and looked in Filters and sure enough "Tacked Animals" was not checked. Once I'd ticked "Tracked Animals" in the filter, then the Passage of Nature Skill worked correctly.

It appears LOTRO turns off that filter by default, so you have to turn it on manually, or else Passage of Nature appears to do absolutely nothing, and you'll wonder why you've bought it! It actually turned out to be a useful skill almost immediately, as I was sent off to find some boar meat. Nice and easy when you can get the map to tell you where the animals are.

What are LOTRO Deeds?

Saturday, 26 May 2007
When I play RPGs, I am the most helpful person around. An NPC wants me to find his lost pig (seriously, there is a lost pig quest in LOTRO), then I am their man. No job too small, no reward too inconsequential. That said, often these types of quests are often what you at a low level while you are waiting to be able to actually fight someone or something worthwhile. The LOTRO Deeds circumvent this by giving an overarching purpose to these quests.
