My first LOTRO smithing

Friday, 08 June 2007
I selected my trade in the LOTRO a while ago, but while I have been running around collecting the odd gem around mining copper deposits for all I'm worth, all I've been doing is selling the ore rather than doing anything with it. This is because the first time I tried to do something with the ore, it was when I was up in Thorin's Hall and I was trying to do my smithing with one of the master forges, which clearly I wasn't able to do as I hadn't even achieved apprentice status by then.

What is a LOTRO MileStone?

Thursday, 07 June 2007

A LOTRO Milestone is not the first time you achieve a goal, but instead a system that offers you limited teleportation ability within LOTRO. With the maps in LOTRO so large, it can be a bind to trek all the way along and then all the way back, although there are stables available to allow you to travel faster - I've yet to use a horse myself, because I'm quite stingy with my money and prefer to keep it to buy stuff and adjust my traits. Not rich enough to fritter it away on public transportation.

Here's how milestones work in LOTRO. You first find a MileStone - they are around settlements normally and they are by the roadside. They should have the word "Milestone" hovering above them. Simply right click and the dialog box will pop up asking if you want to set your map to be attuned to this milestone.

LOTRO Goblin Quests in The Shire

Tuesday, 05 June 2007

The goblin quests in The Shire are more difficult than they first seem, so I've had to work out a "Strategy for the Goblins in the Shire". In fact, it's basically a way of dealing with groups of enemies that are individually fine for you to deal with, but which can overwhelm you if they attack in numbers, and the goblin camps in the Shire quests in LOTRO are very well populated.

There are two main ways to tackle these goblins, and the first will be very familiar to anyone who has played enough RPGs. You get within ranged weapon range of the nearest of the group, and you wait until anyone around them has moved to the furthest point away within their pre-determined path. Like any game, NPC characters or enemies in LOTRO don't just wander around the whole map; they have a pre-defined area that they will walk around in. Scout this out, and then pick you moment. Attack the one you want and if you get it right, that goblin and that one alone will run to attack you, and you should be able to deal with it.

Can't complete LOTRO quest

Monday, 04 June 2007

If you've been part of a LOTRO fellowship quest, or even just turned up to complete a quest right behind someone else, you'll have experienced that aspect of MMOs that can leave you scratching your head the first time it happens. That's right, you complete the quest, turn up to talk to the right person, only to discover they don't want to allow you to complete the quest.

Just the other day, I popped into the library to finish off the Great Took quest in The Shire and did so without a problem, only to have another player ask whether there was something wrong with that quest about a minute later.

Starting a trade in LOTRO

Sunday, 03 June 2007
As if LOTRO Deeds weren't enough of the sort of mini-quest variety, you soon discover that you are eligible to take up a LOTRO trade, or profession. This adds another level of purpose to your wanderings, as well as additional "craft" quests. For example, I decided to become a jeweller and discovered that as part of that I also get to learn cooking and do some mining.
