What is a COG Account?

The CodeMaster Online Gaming Account (or COG Account for short) is the real world account you hold with CodeMasters, the makers of LOTRO, for LOTRO: Shadows of Angmar. You need to create an account as the first thing you do, before trying to log into LOTRO. Whether you are running the full game, or using a 7 day trial activation code, you cannot get into LOTRO without a COG account.

The account name you choose is only used to log in to LOTRO Shadows of Angmar. It does not relate to any character names you choose, which you select completely separately when you create a character within the game. In fact, you should never have a reason to give out your account name within the game world. The COG account is there to identify you to the server, so you can retrieve your characters and play them in game. It also is the means to set up your subscription information. For this reason, you need to know your COG account name and password in order to get into the LOTRO game itself.

The COG Account stores all your characters' information

If you are creating a COG account with a full activation code, you will need to have some way to setting up payment for the ongoing subscription. As LOTRO is an MMO, there is a subscription of roughly £8 to pay each month in order to continue playing, and the COG account requires the credit card information at installation. This is on top of the cost of the original game. The subscription covers the cost of the games servers which you log onto every time you play, and the additional content. Unlike offline games, the MMO game world is constantly being developed and added to, with new areas, quests and items, etc. These are added to your game by downloadable patches that LOTRO will occasionally apply when you start the game. Obviously, you can cancel your subscription at any time to stop paying and playing.

It is likely that there will also be larger expansion packs for the game, later down the line, which will need to be bought separately.

If you are creating a COG account with the trial activation code from a friend, you won't need to enter credit card details. See the separate details on how this 7 day LOTRO trial works.
