If you're trying out LOTRO as your first MMO, then you might be tempted to look to a friend who games for moral support to join you in Middle Earth. The game itself comes with a 7 day trial activation code for your friend to use to play LOTRO. To use the 7 day trial, all you need to do is give the game disc (DVD) to your friend to install and the activation code.
You don't need the game disc to play LOTRO once it has been installed. All the data is installed to your PC's hard drive so you can play the game without the LOTRO DVD in the drive. Your friend will then need to install the game as you did and update it and will need to create a COG account. The good news is though that when they create this account, they will just need this trial activation code. Unlike when you install the game using a full activation code, when LOTRO asks for credit card details up front, they won't need to enter credit card details in order to try the game out, which should make most people feel more at ease. If they do enjoy the game, and want to continue, then they will need to buy a full copy of the game at the end of the trial period in order to get one of the full activation codes which they can enter into their existing COG account and upgrade it, at which point they will then need to enter the credit card details to subscribe, just like any other LOTRO player.
