Temporary Fellowships in LOTRO

You don't really expect to need help when your level 11 character faces off against a swarm of bees. But when the bees are hard to hit, and they followed up by a couple of angry bears, as happens in one quest by a willow tree in The Shire, you may find that you need a bit of help. I did, and it turned out, so did someone else standing right next to me when I'd failed the quest for the third time. Thus, a temporary fellowship was formed.

You'll probably need to create temporary fellowships quite a few times when you're in LOTRO. Basically, it allows you to do all or part of a quest together with someone else, so that you both get the required element of the quest, in this case the pages from the missing chapter. (Incidentally, if you're doing this quest and after having defended the hobbits are wondering where to get the chapter pages from, they appear automatically in your inventory.)

A temporary fellowship can be the only way to complete some quests

So, we completed this part of the quest, disbanded the fellowship and parted. If you want to create a temporary fellowship, it's probably best first to type a message to the other person, rather than just inviting them to a fellowship. Just ask if they want to form a temporary fellowship to perform whatever the task is. I'd only really suggest this if you are both hanging around the same area, clearly waiting to try the same quest. Otherwise, you might look like you are harassing people.

Funnily enough, I was running back past the willow tree later on, when I saw another person trying to take on the bees and the bears alone, so I got out my bow and helped out. As I was about to head off again, the hobbit shouted to me to thank me - it had been their firth attempt at the same quest! So, we formed another temporary fellowship to go off and clear out a bear den.

This drop-in drop-out fellowship method is a great way of having a bit of social interaction in the LOTRO without having to sign up for long raids and quests. If you find someone who you like and get on with while doing some of these quickies, you can always add them to your friend's list so they appear in the Social dialog. Then you can team back up with another time.
