I selected my trade in the LOTRO a while ago, but while I have been running around collecting the odd gem around mining copper deposits for all I'm worth, all I've been doing is selling the ore rather than doing anything with it. This is because the first time I tried to do something with the ore, it was when I was up in Thorin's Hall and I was trying to do my smithing with one of the master forges, which clearly I wasn't able to do as I hadn't even achieved apprentice status by then.
It was only when I came across a small forge in The Shire and right clicked on it that I discovered I could do smithing after all. My character's trade sheet appeared and all I had to do was click on the smithing tab at the top. I could then one of the ores that I had simply click on Make and I had turned the ore into a new been ingot. It was around then that I realised what you needed to do in order to improve your skills in your chosen trade. It really is as simple as finding the raw materials you need to produce whatever it is shown in the apprentice skills tab and then going to the relevant workshop place and perform the task. Obvious really, and I had kind of guessed it but for some reason I had been so distracted with the other quests the I haven't really had time to do anything with my LOTRO trades. Now I've realised how much you can actually do in passing as it were, I'll put more effort into my LOTRO trades. Although I'm still not sure why I want to be a Master Blacksmith anyway.
