First few hours of SoA

I
'm a couple of hours into LOTRO Shadows of Angmar now and amazingly I've managed to not speak to anyone. I've run around and killed lots of wildlife that would have been quite happy to ignore me, except for the fact that I was converting them all into porcupines with my bow and arrow.

That's worked find for me and I'm now a magnificent level 4 hunter. Now, while all RPGs level you up quickly at the lower levels, it has been something of an unsatisfying process so far. For a start, I've hardly done anything to earn my levels.

The first few levels are not very challenging for any RPGer

I've been led around by the nose on a quest to find out about some goblin attacks – which led to my first problem in Shadows of Angmar, namely getting lost. I wasn't really paying attention to where I was when someone gave me a quest and the directions were "From here…" so when I came back to it, I had no idea where I was supposed to be going.

All was not lost (only my character) however as I came across a signpost and worked out that I could find my way using this. You would have thought that the minimap would have helped me, but so far I've struggled to decipher it. I thought that the star off to the edge would lead me to my current quest destination, but it doesn't seem to and I can't work out what it is for.

Still, I got there in the end and completed the simple "fetch boy" quest. I've also managed to pick up a few other quests alongside this "main one", but I think that unlike RPGs, in MMOs you can't think of there being a "main" quest, just a current one, because you're talking about a permanent world, a continuous game, rather than a story led RPG. I could be wrong; we'll see how where this quest that's leading me around takes me.

The other unsatisfying part of levelling up in LOTRO so far has been what I've been rewarded with. Basically, you get to choose a new skill, but given that there's only one skill available for these levels, it's not much of a choice. Actually, it's not any choice, so my level 4 hunter is presumably exactly the same as any other. I don't get to choose much at all at the moment. My stats increase each level, it says, but that's automatic. Unlike RPGs, I think most of the customisation is in the clothing and weapons you choose, but that feels slightly unsatisfying at the moment.

[EDIT] Having re-read the manual, I've discovered that the gold arrows in the LOTRO mini-map point in the direction of towns.[/EDIT]
