Fellowship combinations in LOTRO |

Saturday morning afforded a little more time to run around so, under the pretext of showing LOTRO off to a friend, I started a new fellowship with a Champion I met in Nogland. Still wanting to finish off the Villains in the Vale Quest, I asked if he wanted to do this one, but he wanted to go and do the City nearby, which turned out to be the same place I wanted to go. Fellowships in LOTRO online are easy to start and finish, but communicating between members with text chat is almost impossible in a fight, so it does tend to feel uncoordinated.
Anyway, off we set and promptly got killed again at the end, so back to the nearby town, where another Champion joined us. As we headed back to the goblin camp, we met a minstrel who I quickly invited to the fellowship and back up the stairs we headed. Now for the first time, I saw the real power of joining together in a fellowship in Shadows of Angmar. It makes an enormous difference, not just because of the numbers. As the LOTRO manual itself states, a fellowship is far more than the sum of its parts.
While I could pick off a target with my bow, drawing them into melee range, the two champions would finish them off. This enabled us to move swiftly through the enemies, without having to just wade in and tackle them all at once. Meanwhile, the minstrel hung back around us, buffing us and damaging the enemies. It was an incredibly useful combination. The only negative I found was that you can't text chat and nobody else had voice on, which I understand. After all, we didn’t know each other at all. What would be useful though in LOTRO would be some quick keys to issue "commands" to your fellowship. Stuff like "Wait", "Attack nearest", etc. Just a handful would be enough and they would need to be displayed in the main game area, not in the Social dialog, because there's no time to keep checking that when you're fighting.
Anyway, we worked our way though the quest pretty efficiently and it was really enjoyable, so I fully recommend trying to get a decent size posse together, rather than feeling shy and settling for a fellowship of two because you feel more comfortable. What was odd too was that not only did I complete the Villains in the Vale quest, I also found a gear that I needed for another solo quest, which was a bit of nonsense, because I couldn't possibly have done that quest alone. I took the gear, but afterwards did worry as to whether I should have shared that quest too, and whether I simply stole the gear from under the noses of the others, who might of needed it too. I don't know whether there was a gear there for me and for anyone else who had the quest in the fellowship too. If I did inadvertently nick it, I can't imagine I'll be invited to help any of them again. I shall do some digging on the subject. Edit: If you are on a shared quest, quest items appear for all involved party members. Also, it is worth reading my later post on what makes a good fellowship combination in LOTRO. Trackback(0)
